The Fear of the Lord

The Fear of the Lord

Reading: Acts 5:1-11; Proverbs 9:10

Devotional: The story of Ananias and Sapphira shocks us because we've lost the healthy fear of God's holiness. This isn't terror that drives us away, but reverence that draws us near with authenticity.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom—it's recognizing that God is both loving and holy, gracious and pure. When this reverence fills our hearts, pretense becomes impossible. We stop performing for people and start surrendering to God.

Notice that Acts 5:11 marks the first time believers are called "the church"—immediately after this demonstration of God's holiness. Before growth, before miracles, before influence came reverence. A casual familiarity with God's presence is dangerous.

Today, examine your approach to worship, prayer, and Scripture. Do you come casually or reverently?
