Rejoicing in Suffering

Rejoicing in Suffering

Reading: Acts 5:40-41; James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 4:12-14

Devotional: After being brutally flogged, the apostles left "rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name." This isn't natural—it's supernatural. The world celebrates after victory; believers can celebrate even after beatings. Why? Because suffering for Christ's name is a badge of honor, proof that you belong to Him. Jesus warned, "The world hated me before it hated you." Your suffering isn't evidence of God's abandonment—it's evidence of your identification with Christ.

This perspective transforms everything. Anyone can praise God when prison doors open; mature believers praise God even when doors remain closed. This kind of joy can't be manufactured through positive thinking—it flows from a heart that has already settled who is truly worthy. When hardship comes for Jesus' sake, let it reveal what's already inside you.

Reflection: How do you typically respond to difficulty? Can you find reasons to rejoice even in current struggles?
