Scattered on Purpose
Reading: Acts 1:8; Acts 8:4
Acts 1:8 describes the commission Jesus gave before His ascension, promising power through the Holy Spirit and calling His followers to be witnesses extending from Jerusalem outward to Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth.
Acts 8:4 records that those who were scattered went through various places sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
Devotional: The commission of Jesus in Acts 1:8 was never fully obeyed while the church remained comfortable in Jerusalem. They had real success, real favor, and real growth, and yet they had not crossed a single border.
Comfort can coexist with genuine faith and still fall short of calling. The fire did not ask for their budget or their ministry goals. It simply thrust them outward. What looked like a violent scattering was actually the fulfillment of a command they had not yet obeyed. God will sometimes use pressure to accomplish what comfort never could. Being sent is not the same as being defeated.
Reflection: Is there an area of your life where God has been calling you outward and comfort has been keeping you contained? What border have you yet to cross?
Practical Application: Identify one person in your life outside your usual circles, a neighbor, a coworker, someone you have been hesitant to engage. Pray for that person by name every day this week and look for one natural opportunity to share something of your faith with them.
